What Are Cents, and Why Pitch Error Is Not Measured in Hertz

A 2 Hz difference at 220 Hz does not have the same perceptual meaning as a 2 Hz difference at 880 Hz. Cents turn absolute frequency differences into interval ratios so different registers can be compared on the same scale.

Pitch Relationships Are About Ratios, Not Simple Subtraction

Doubling frequency is one octave in music: 220 to 440 Hz and 440 to 880 Hz are the same octave relationship, even though the hertz differences are 220 and 440 respectively. Equal temperament divides an octave into 12 semitones and each semitone into 100 cents, making one octave exactly 1200 cents.

Cent deviation = 1200 × log₂(detected frequency ÷ target frequency)

A positive result means sharp, a negative result means flat, and zero means the detected frequency matches the target. This unit describes a frequency ratio; it does not judge whether a voice sounds pleasant or represent all aspects of singing skill.

A Practical Calculation Example

Using the common A4 reference of 440 Hz as the target, a detected frequency of 445 Hz gives about +19.6 cents, while 435 Hz gives about −19.8 cents. The values are close in magnitude because their ratios relative to 440 Hz are similar.

If you use a raw hertz difference, the same ±5 Hz appears larger in a low register and smaller in a high register. Cents let a target range retain more consistent musical meaning across different octaves.
